EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in time at the National Children's Home in Edgworth, near Bolton, a place of refuge and care for thousands of vulnerable children over the course of more than a century. Founded in 1872 by the Methodist minister Thomas Bowman Stephenson, this was the first National Children's Home in the United Kingdom. The home, located on the Moor at Edgworth, was later known as Crowthorn Special Needs Residential School, providing education and care for children with various disabilities. In this image, we see a group of inmates, likely children, gathered around a table with staff members, possibly engaged in an activity or lesson. The atmosphere is one of warmth and companionship, with the staff members smiling and attentive to the needs of the children. The children, dressed in simple clothing, appear curious and engaged, their expressions full of wonder and excitement. The National Children's Home at Edgworth was a pioneering institution, providing a safe and nurturing environment for children who were orphaned, abandoned, or otherwise in need of care. Over the years, the home grew and evolved to meet the changing needs of the children it served, eventually becoming Crowthorn Special Needs Residential School. The home closed its doors in 2002, marking the end of an era in the history of children's welfare in the United Kingdom. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the important work that was carried out at the National Children's Home in Edgworth, and the countless lives that were touched by the dedication and compassion of its staff. Thomas Bowman Stephenson's vision of providing a loving and supportive environment for children in need lived on long after his time, leaving a lasting legacy in the lives of countless individuals and families.
