EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases the iridescent plumage of a female Ross's Turaco (Musophaga rossae), a species of bird endemic to the forests of Central and West Africa. The turaco's skin, displayed here, was collected by the renowned 19th century naturalist, Emin Pasha, during his expedition to Tingasi in Equatorial Africa on October 8, 1883. The original label, now housed at the Natural History Museum in London, bears the accession number 1887.9.28.45 and the scientific name Musophaga rossae. Emin Pasha, an Austro-Hungarian officer and explorer, was a significant figure in the European exploration of Central Africa during the Victorian era. His collection of specimens, including this Ross's Turaco, contributed significantly to the scientific understanding of the avian fauna of Africa during that time. The Ross's Turaco, also known as Lady Ross's Turaco or the Rosss's Turaco, is a member of the Musophagidae family and the Musophagiformes order, which includes the turacos and the guineafowls. This bird is easily recognizable by its distinctive blue-black plumage, with a bright blue-green sheen that is particularly evident in this high-quality print. The Ross's Turaco is a sauropsid, a group of reptile-like birds that includes the modern birds and their extinct ancestors. This historical photograph print offers a unique glimpse into the natural history of the Ross's Turaco and the explorations of Emin Pasha in 19th century Africa. The intricately detailed image, set against a pristine white background, is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the importance of preserving the records of our past for future generations.
