EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, captured in 1935, we find Margaret Whigham, later known as Mrs. Charles Sweeney and the Duchess of Argyll, a prominent figure in British society. At the time this image was taken, Margaret was still basking in the glow of her debutante of the year title, awarded in 1930. Her elegant appearance and captivating beauty were a staple of the fashionable circles she moved in. Margaret Whigham was born into a wealthy and influential family, and her debut into society was a grand affair. Her debutante ball, held at the Dorchester Hotel in London, was a resplendent occasion attended by the cream of British high society. The young debutante's poised demeanor and radiant smile captured the hearts and imaginations of many, and she quickly became a popular figure in London's social scene. However, Margaret's life took a dramatic turn in the years that followed. In 1937, she married American golfer Ian Campbell, the 10th Duke of Argyll. Their marriage was a whirlwind romance, and Margaret became the Duchess of Argyll. However, the marriage was not to last. In 1963, the Duchess's scandalous divorce case made headlines around the world. The case involved the publication of photographs of a "headless man" in the Duchess's flat, which were later revealed to be of her lover, the Earl of Dundee. The scandal plunged the Duchess into disgrace and penury, and she spent the rest of her life trying to rebuild her reputation. This portrait, taken just two years before the scandal, offers a glimpse into a moment in time when Margaret Whigham was still a beloved and respected figure in British society. Her timeless beauty and poised demeanor are evident in this image, making it a fascinating window into the past.
