EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the determination and courage of Miss Yvonne Fitzroy, a British actress and dedicated nurse during the First World War. Daughter of Sir Almeric Fitzroy, who had been Clerk of the Privy Council since 1898, Yvonne's privileged upbringing belied the extraordinary role she would play on the front lines. As the war raged on, Yvonne left her acting career behind and answered the call to serve. She first worked at Mrs Dugdales hospital in Derbyshire before being deployed to the Scottish Women's Hospital in Roumania. Her selfless dedication to the wounded soldiers earned her high military decoration, a testament to her admirable war work. Yvonne's experiences in Roumania were later chronicled in her book, "With the Scottish Nurses in Roumania," providing a firsthand account of the challenges and triumphs faced by the women who served on the front lines. In this image, Yvonne is seen in her military uniform, her gaze steady and resolute, a symbol of the countless women who bravely stepped forward to support the war effort. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the vital role women played during the First World War, defying societal norms and expectations to make a difference in the face of adversity. Yvonne Fitzroy's story continues to inspire us today, a testament to the enduring power of courage, resilience, and the human spirit.
