EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enchanting presence of Yvonne Fitzroy (1891-1971), a British actress and humanitarian, in the early 1920s. Daughter of Sir Almeric Fitzroy, who served as Clerk of the Privy Council since 1898, Yvonne's upbringing in high society circles was a stark contrast to the selfless path she would soon choose. Before embarking on her acting career, Yvonne dedicated herself to the nursing profession. Her first posting was at Mrs. Dugdales Hospital in Derbyshire, where she honed her skills and compassionate nature. However, it was her service during the war that truly defined her. In 1916, Yvonne joined the Scottish Women's Hospital in Roumania, aiding soldiers and civilians affected by the brutalities of war. Her unwavering commitment and dedication earned her several decorations, including the Order of the Star of Romania. After the war, Yvonne shared her harrowing yet inspiring experiences in her book, "With the Scottish Nurses in Roumania." Her memoir offered a unique perspective on the human cost of war and the resilience of those who served. In this portrait, Yvonne is depicted wearing a headscarf, a practical accessory for her nursing work. Her piercing gaze and poised demeanor convey a sense of determination and inner strength. The image serves as a testament to Yvonne's remarkable journey from privileged society member to selfless nurse and author. Her story continues to inspire us with its blend of courage, compassion, and the power of the human spirit.
