Metropolitan Music Hall, Edgware Road

The Metropolitan Music Hall, 207 Edgware Road London - a very fine Music Hall which was sadly demolished in 1963 to allow the building of a flyover for the A40. Formerly an inn called the White Lion public house, the theatre was re-built in 1862 and opened under the new name of the Metropolitan Music Hall two years later. Re-built again in 1897 by Frank Matcham. Photograph by Heinz Zinram

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time and experience the enchanting allure of the Metropolitan Music Hall, once a beloved cultural gem nestled along Edgware Road in London. Originally established as the White Lion public house in the mid-19th century, this historic venue underwent a transformation in 1862, reopening as the Metropolitan Music Hall two years later. The theatre was later re-built in 1897 under the visionary guidance of renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham, who infused the space with exquisite detail and grandeur. As evening approached, the Metropolitan Music Hall came alive with the promise of entertainment. The vibrant posters adorning its facade announced upcoming shows, drawing in theatregoers from all corners of the city. The Irish community, in particular, held a special affinity for this cherished venue, which played host to a rich and diverse range of performances. Sadly, the Metropolitan Music Hall's story did not have an eternal ending. In the 1960s, progress took precedence over history, and the theatre was demolished to make way for a flyover on the A40. Today, we can only imagine the magic that once unfolded within its walls, as we gaze upon this evocative photograph by Heinz Zinram. The Metropolitan Music Hall stands as a proud testament to London's theatrical heritage, a reminder of the enchantment and wonder that once filled the city's streets during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
