Metropolitan Music Hall, Edgware Road

The Metropolitan Music Hall, 207 Edgware Road London - a very fine Music Hall which was sadly demolished in 1963 to allow the building of a flyover for the A40. Formerly an inn called the White Lion public house, the theatre was re-built in 1862 and opened under the new name of the Metropolitan Music Hall two years later. Re-built again in 1897 by Frank Matcham. Photograph by Heinz Zinram

Dr Heinz Zinram - Photographer

Dr. Heinrich (Heinz) Zinram (1910 - 2008) - photographer, born in Vienna, qualified as a Dr of Law in the early 1930s. Left Austria for England in 1939, but in the summer of 1940 was sent to Australia as a declared 'Enemy Alien' (in the UK). Dr Zinram found himself at a internee camp in Hay, New South Wales, where he remained for 2 years before deciding to risk the dangerous passage back to the UK. By the late 1940s, Dr Zinram was a well established photographer and a Fellow and Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. Dr Zinram worked for clients such as Time Life, London Transport, British Mail, the Mirror Group, Patons & Baldwins and Wedgwood, his unerring eye for composition and grasp of technical issues producing a body of work which is striking, beautifully shot and highly distinctive.

Machine for testing wagon springs

The World's First Railway Laboratory was set up at Crewe in 1864. One hundred years later, the Duke of Edinburgh opened new engineering research laboratories at Derby. The large test hall houses a heavy dynamic fatigue testing installation for experiments with bridge girders and concrete units. This photograph shows equipment used for testing wagon springs.
