EDITORS COMMENTS
Mere Agnes Arnauld, born Jeanne-Catherine-Agnes Arnauld in 1593, was a prominent figure in the Jansenist movement in 17th century France. Known as Mere Agnes, she became the abbess of the monastery of Saint-Cyr in Paris in 1616, and later of Port-Royal in 1626. This oval print captures Mere Agnes in a moment of deep contemplation and prayer, her expression serene and focused as she gazes upon a crucifix. The black veil covering her head and the simple, austere habit she wears are emblematic of her commitment to a life of devotion and spiritual discipline. Mere Agnes was a key figure in the Jansenist movement, which emphasized the importance of individual conscience and the strict observance of religious rules. Her leadership at Port-Royal, a monastery known for its rigorous adherence to Jansenist principles, made her a target of criticism from the Church hierarchy. In 1655, she was placed under house arrest by the Bishop of Paris, an event that came to be known as the "Affair of the Angels." Despite this, Mere Agnes continued to lead her community and uphold the Jansenist teachings, earning her a reputation as a courageous and unwavering defender of her faith. Mere Agnes Arnauld passed away in 1672, leaving behind a legacy as a respected and influential religious figure. Her life and work continue to be studied by historians and scholars, and her image remains an enduring symbol of the Jansenist movement and the spiritual fervor of the 17th century.
