EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image, a marine from the Mortar Platoon of 40 Commando Royal Marines takes a moment of respite during a fire mission in the heart of Iraq's conflict. Amidst the ruins of a former chemical works near Baghdad, the marine savors the luxury of a field shower, a simple yet precious comfort in the harsh desert environment. This photograph was taken during Operation BRACKEN in 2004, when the 1st Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) Battle Group was deployed in the 24 Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) area of operations south of Baghdad. The Battle Group, consisting of Battle Group Headquarters, Companies A, B, D, and HQ, as well as attachments from 40 Commando Royal Marines, B Squadron Queens Dragoon Guards, and various combat support and combat service support elements, was authorized by the British Prime Minister to conduct operations in this region. The area was a series of derelict buildings, providing a stark contrast to the marine's pristine uniform and the modern equipment at his disposal. This poignant image, captured by WO2 Giles Penfound of Army Media Operations, offers a glimpse into the daily life of the soldiers serving in this challenging and complex mission.
