1839 Campbell Hugh Hume Margaret Spottiswoode

EDITORS COMMENTS
Margaret Hume-Campbell, née Spottiswoode (1785-1839), was a Scottish woman of noble lineage and refined beauty, renowned for her intelligence, wit, and grace. Daughter of the 5th Earl of Dalhousie and Lady Elizabeth Spottiswoode, Margaret was a member of one of Scotland's most distinguished families. In 1807, she married Sir Hugh Hume-Campbell, 3rd Baronet of Lawers and Cawdor, a prominent Scottish landowner and politician. The couple's union was celebrated for its love and compatibility, and they went on to have eleven children together. This elegant portrait captures Lady Margaret Hume-Campbell in her prime, dressed in the height of Regency fashion. Her striking features, including her piercing blue eyes and delicate complexion, are accentuated by the intricate detail of her gown and the elegant folds of her shawl. The portrait suggests a woman of great poise and sophistication, reflecting the refined sensibilities of the time. Margaret Hume-Campbell was known for her intelligence and wit, and was a patron of the arts and literature. She was a generous hostess and entertained many distinguished guests at her husband's estate, Cawdor Castle, in the Scottish Highlands. Her salon was a hub of intellectual and artistic activity, and she was particularly fond of music and poetry. Sadly, Lady Margaret Hume-Campbell passed away in 1839, leaving behind a legacy of beauty, grace, and intelligence. Her memory lives on in the annals of Scottish history, and this portrait serves as a poignant reminder of a remarkable woman and her enduring impact on Scottish society.
