Lute - In general use throughout the 16th and 17th centuries
Lute - In general use throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, but its origin can be traced back to to about 1000 BC. The instrument illustrated is Italian, dating from circa 1600 by Venere of Padua (Padova). During the 18th century the lute lost favour to the guitar, which was easier to play and the popular spinet which allowed playing using both hands (allowing the playing of an air along with an accompaniment at the same time). The mandolin of today is a treble lute. Date: 1929

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases a beautifully crafted Italian lute, dating back to around 1600, created by the renowned Venere of Padua (Padova) in Italy. Lutes, an ancient stringed instrument with origins tracing back to approximately 1000 BC, were widely used during the 16th and 17th centuries. This particular instrument, with its intricate design and delicate strings, exemplifies the artistry and skill of its time. The lute's multi-string structure allowed for a rich and complex sound, making it a favorite among musicians and composers during the Renaissance period. The image captures a close-up view of the instrument, revealing the intricately carved body and the meticulously arranged strings. A cigarette and a card lay casually nearby, perhaps hinting at a moment of relaxation or contemplation for the musician. By the 18th century, the lute began to lose favor to more modern instruments, such as the guitar and the spinet. The guitar's simpler design and ease of use, as well as the spinet's ability to be played using both hands, made these instruments more popular for their versatility in playing melodies and accompaniments simultaneously. Nonetheless, the lute's historical significance and unique sound continue to captivate musicians and music enthusiasts to this day. This evocative photograph, taken in 1929, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the lute reigned supreme as a symbol of artistic expression and musical innovation.
