EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolour painting depicts Leptospermum ericoides, commonly known as kanuka, a native flowering plant from the Myrtaceae family endemic to New Zealand and Australia. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Fred Polydore Nodder in the late 18th century, based on an original outline drawing by Sydney Parkinson during Captain James Cook's historic first voyage across the Pacific Ocean from 1768 to 1771. Cook's ship, the Endeavour, made landfall in New Zealand, providing Parkinson with the opportunity to document the unique flora of the region. Leptospermum ericoides is a small, evergreen shrub that can grow up to 3 meters tall. It is characterized by its small, white to pink flowers that bloom in clusters, giving the plant a beautiful and fragrant appearance. The plant is also known as the New Zealand tea tree, as the Maori people traditionally used its leaves for brewing a tea. The botanical name of Leptospermum ericoides reflects its taxonomic classification as an angiosperm, a type of flowering plant that produces seeds enclosed in an ovary. It is further classified as a eudicot, a subgroup of angiosperms that have two embryonic seed leaves (cotyledons), and a member of the order Myrtales. This watercolour painting is a testament to the remarkable discoveries made during Cook's voyage and the important role that botanical illustrations played in documenting the natural world. Fred Polydore Nodder's meticulous attention to detail and Sydney Parkinson's original observation have resulted in a beautiful and enduring record of this fascinating plant.
