EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving depicts a King Penguin, Aptenodytes patagonicus, in its natural habitat. The intricate details of the penguin's plumage, from the iridescent sheen on its back to the distinctive orange-yellow markings on its chest, are beautifully rendered in this illustration drawn and engraved by Richard Polydore Nodder. The King Penguin is the second largest of all penguin species, reaching up to 33 inches in height and weighing up to 22 pounds. They are named for the royal appearance of their black and white plumage and their regal carrying of their chicks on their feet. This illustration was created in the early 19th century and is from George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany, published in London in 1800. The Naturalist's Miscellany was a popular natural history publication that featured high-quality illustrations of a wide range of animals, including birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish. The publication was notable for its meticulous attention to detail and its commitment to accurate representation of the natural world. The King Penguin is native to the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic regions, where it breeds in large colonies on islands and rocky shores. They are excellent swimmers, capable of diving up to 1,600 feet deep in search of food, primarily fish and squid. During the breeding season, King Penguins form large colonies, with the chicks huddled together for warmth in the crowded nesting sites. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this majestic and iconic species.
