King Edward VIII, also known as the Duke of Windsor after his abdication from the throne, is shown here in full uniform, proudly wearing the RAF cap adorned with the distinctive roundel and the gold braid of his rank as Air Marshal. The stripes on his sleeves denote his previous military rank as a Colonel in the Household Cavalry. King Edward VIII's appointment as Chief of the RAF came shortly after his accession to the throne in 1936, a position he held until his abdication later that year. During his brief reign, he expressed great interest in aviation and even earned his pilot's license.
