EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the intellectual brilliance and pioneering spirit of Joseph Henry (1797-1878), an American physicist of unparalleled importance in the realm of electro-magnetism. Henry's groundbreaking discoveries in the field earned him the distinction of having the SI unit of inductance named in his honor – the henry. Born in Albany, New York, Henry's curiosity and passion for science led him to make significant strides in the understanding of electromagnetism, including the discovery of self-inductance and the development of the first electric motor and dynamo. In addition to his scientific accomplishments, Henry served as the first Secretary and later, the first Director of the Smithsonian Institution, establishing it as a leading center for scientific research in the United States. Henry's vision for the advancement of science extended beyond his own work. He was a founding member of the National Institute for the Promotion of Science, the precursor to the Smithsonian Institution, and played a crucial role in fostering a culture of scientific exploration and discovery in America during the 19th century. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to science and education, Henry was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Great Americans in the Bronx, New York, in 1915. This portrait, taken during the 1870s, offers a glimpse into the life of a true scientific pioneer whose influence continues to shape our understanding of the natural world.
