EDITORS COMMENTS
John I of Castile (1358-1390), also known as Juan I of Castile and Juan el de la Cruz (John the Cruel), is depicted in this engraving from the cover of the "Chronicle of the Reign of John I" by Pedro Lopez de Ayala. This chronicle, written between 1390 and 1407, is a significant historical work that chronicles the reign of John I in the Crown of Castile during the late medieval period in Europe. John I was a prominent statesman and personage of the Middle Ages, ruling over the Crown of Castile from 1379 until his death in 1390. Born in Barcelona, he ascended to the throne after the death of his father, Peter the Cruel, and faced numerous challenges during his reign, including rebellions in Catalonia and conflicts with neighboring kingdoms. This portrait of John I, as depicted on the cover of Pedro Lopez de Ayala's chronicle, showcases the king in regal attire, wearing a crown and holding a scepter. The engraving also includes the inscription "Libro de los hechos del muy noble y muy potentisimo rey don Juan I de Castilla," which translates to "Book of the Deeds of the Very Noble and Powerful King John I of Castille." Pedro Lopez de Ayala was a renowned chronicler, poet, and historian of the late medieval period in Spain. His work on the reign of John I is an invaluable source of information for scholars and historians studying this period in European history. The cover of the chronicle, with its intricate engraving and historical significance, is a testament to the importance of this work in the annals of Castilian literature and history.
