EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite illuminated manuscript page, hailing from the fifteenth century, depicts a poignant scene from the New Testament as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew (15:21-28). The scene unfolds between Tyre and Sidon, where Jesus and his disciples are met by a desperate Canaanite woman. Kneeling before the Son of God, she implores him to heal her daughter, who is tormented by a demon. Jesus initially dismisses her, responding that he has been sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Undeterred, the woman persists, declaring her faith and pleading for her daughter's salvation. Touched by her unwavering belief, Jesus grants her request, and the demon is cast out. This scene is beautifully rendered in the Codex of Predis, a magnificent illuminated manuscript produced in Italy during the Renaissance. The artist, Cristoforo di Geremia, masterfully captures the emotion and intensity of the moment, with Jesus' disciples looking on in awe. The figures are dressed in robes and tunicas, while the woman's sandals add a touch of realism to the scene. This manuscript, now housed in the Royal Library in Turin, Italy, is a testament to the rich artistic and religious heritage of the Middle Ages and the enduring power of faith. The intricate details, from the delicate folds of the robes to the expressive faces of the figures, serve to bring this biblical story to life and remind us of the profound impact of faith and perseverance.
