1812 2000 Devised Hold Improved Inmates Jeremy Management Originally Panopticon Pauper Plan Scheme Workhouse

EDITORS COMMENTS
This ground plan, published in 1812, illustrates the design of Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon, a revolutionary architectural concept devised by the English philosopher and social reformer. Bentham, who held strong beliefs in the power of surveillance and its potential to reform and improve the management of institutions, originally proposed the Panopticon as a scheme for housing and workhouses for paupers. The name derives from the Panoptes, the all-seeing god of Greek mythology. The Panopticon's unique design features a circular building with cells arranged around the perimeter, each with a window facing the central observation tower. The tower allows a single watchman to observe all inmates at once, creating a constant sense of being watched. This psychological pressure was intended to encourage good behavior and discourage misconduct. Bentham's Panopticon was not limited to workhouses; he believed it could be applied to prisons, schools, hospitals, and other institutions. The ground plan demonstrates the versatility of the design, with different zones allocated for various purposes, such as workshops, kitchens, and living quarters. Although the Panopticon was never built in its entirety during Bentham's lifetime, it influenced the design of various institutions, including prisons and mental health facilities. The concept of the Panopticon continues to resonate in contemporary discussions on surveillance, privacy, and the relationship between power and control.
