EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Jane Elizabeth Digby, later known as Lady Ellenborough, is depicted in the prime of her life, radiantly beautiful and full of vitality. Born in 1807 as the daughter of the 9th Baron Digby, Jane's unconventional life began when she married Edward Law, the second Baron Ellenborough, in 1833. The marriage was unhappy, and they eventually divorced in 1854, marking the beginning of Jane's most adventurous years. Despite the scandal that surrounded her divorce, Jane's spirit remained undeterred. She traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, embracing new cultures and experiences. In 1869, she settled in Syria, where she became enamored with the local customs and people. She built a house in Damascus and spent the remainder of her life there, living as a Syrian princess and becoming known as "Lady Qadisha," or "Lady of the Holy Land." Jane's time in Syria was marked by her patronage of the arts and her support of local industries. She was a prolific writer, publishing several books on her travels and experiences. Her memoirs, "My Recollections of Syria and Lebanon," are a testament to her adventurous spirit and her deep appreciation for the Middle East. This photograph, taken in 1881, captures Jane in her later years, still full of life and curiosity. Her eyes reflect the wisdom and experiences of a woman who lived a life far removed from the conventions of her time. Jane Elizabeth Digby, Lady Ellenborough, remains an intriguing figure in history, a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and find joy in the most unexpected places.
