EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite painting, titled "Saint Lucia and her Mother with the Vision of Saint Agatha in Catania," is a masterpiece by the Italian Renaissance artist Jacopo del Fiore, also known as Jacopo da Fermo or simply Jacopo di Massei. Created around 1410, this oil on wood work of art is a vertical composition that measures approximately 113 x 89 cm and is currently housed in the Civic Pinacotheca of Fermo, Italy. The painting depicts the legendary story of Saint Lucia, the patron saint of Sicily and of the blind, and her mother Eutychia. According to tradition, Lucia was a young virgin who was persecuted under the Roman Emperor Diocletian for her Christian faith. She was sentenced to be put to death by sword, but miraculously survived the execution. Her eyes were gouged out, but they were restored by God, and she continued to live and spread the word of Christianity. In this painting, we see Lucia, dressed in the traditional attire of a noblewoman of the time, seated on a chair, holding a palm branch and a vial of her own eyes. Her mother, Eutychia, is shown on the left side, looking up in awe as she witnesses a vision of Saint Agatha, the patron saint of Catania, Sicily, and a fellow martyr. Agatha is depicted holding a palm branch and a vial with her own severed breasts, symbols of her own martyrdom. The use of rich colors and the fine details in the painting demonstrate the artistic skill and mastery of Jacopo del Fiore, who was a contemporary of other renowned artists of the Quattrocento period, such as Masaccio and Masolino. The painting's vertical composition and the dramatic use of light and shadow add to the sense of depth and realism, making it a true masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance.
