Taken in 1876, the year of Custer's Last Stand, Hickok is shown in his prime, his intense gaze fixed on the camera lens, a testament to the legendary marksmanship that earned him the moniker 'Wild Bill'. Born in 1837 in Troy, Illinois, Hickok's early life was marked by a series of adventures that saw him become a scout for the US Army, a stagecoach driver, and a professional gambler. By the time this photograph was taken, Hickok had already made a name for himself as a lawman, serving as a marshal in several towns in Kansas and Nebraska. He was known for his quick draw and his ability to bring law and order to chaotic frontier communities. But Hickok's reputation was not without controversy. He was involved in numerous shootouts, some of which were justified acts of self-defense, while others were the result of his hot-headed temper. Tragically, Hickok was shot in the back of the head while playing poker in Deadwood, South Dakota, in 1876. The man who pulled the trigger, Jack McCall, was later tried and hanged for the crime.
