Antarctic Antarctica Buckingham Exploration Heroes Honour Honouring Medals Polar Pole Scott

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures a poignant moment at Buckingham Palace on July 26, 1913, as His Majesty King George V honours the officers of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Antarctic expedition to the South Pole. The team, dressed in their formal uniforms, proudly face the camera after receiving their well-deserved medals for their valiant efforts. The year prior, in March 1912, five brave men – Edgar Evans, Henry Bowers, Lawrence Oates, Edward Wright, and Thomas Crean – lost their lives during the harrowing journey back from the South Pole. Their tragic demise came just 17 days after Roald Amundsen's team had reached the pole, making Scott's team the runners-up in the race to be the first to the South Pole. King George V, recognizing their heroic endeavours and sacrifices, presented medals not only to the surviving officers but also to the widows and mothers of the fallen heroes. This act of honour served as a testament to the bravery and determination of these explorers, who had braved the harsh Antarctic conditions in pursuit of scientific discovery and national pride. This photograph is a significant piece of Antarctic exploration history, showcasing the officers' unwavering spirit and the recognition they received for their achievements. The image stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made by these brave men and their enduring legacy in the annals of polar exploration.
