EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour painting depicts the Hedycarya arborea, also known as the pigeonwood tree, as illustrated by the 18th century artist Fred Polydore Nodder. The original outline drawing for this work was made during Captain James Cook's first voyage across the Pacific Ocean, between 1768 and 1771. Cook's expedition, aboard the HMS Endeavour, was a groundbreaking journey of discovery that saw the explorer and his crew navigate uncharted waters and make first contact with various indigenous peoples. The pigeonwood tree is an angiosperm, a type of flowering plant, and is a member of the Monimiaceae family, which is part of the larger group of plants known as Magnoliids. The tree is native to Australia and New Zealand and is characterized by its small, glossy leaves and its attractive, white flowers. The tree is also known to have attracted various bird species, including pigeons and doves, hence its common name. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world as it was observed and documented during the 18th century. Sydney Parkinson, the original artist, made this drawing during the expedition, and it was later completed as a watercolour by Fred Polydore Nodder. The attention to detail in the painting is remarkable, with each leaf and vein rendered with great care and precision. The inclusion of a bird perched on a branch adds a sense of scale and brings the illustration to life, transporting us back in time to the Pacific Ocean during Cook's historic voyage.
