EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the essence of traditional Scottish clan costume, as worn by an unidentified member of the Gordon Clan in the early 20th century. The image is taken from "The Highland Clans of Scotland Vol. 1," published in 1923 by Mary Evans Picture Library. The Gordon Clan, one of the oldest and most distinguished in Scottish history, is represented here by this proud and noble figure. The intricately woven tartan plaid, in the colors of the clan, is draped over the shoulders and secured with a brooch known as a "garter badge," bearing the Gordon crest. A white shirt, or "waistcoat," is worn beneath the plaid, along with a red sash, or "feileadh-mór," which is worn around the waist and tucked into the belt. The kilt, or "feileadh-mór an t-sagadh," is made of the same tartan fabric and is secured with a belt, or "belted plaid," which is worn around the waist and tucked into the kilt. The kilt is held up by a series of pleats, or "folds," which are arranged in a distinctive way and are known as the "apron" or "front pleats." The Gordon Clan's bonnet, or "balmoral bonnet," is adorned with a feather, symbolizing the clan's connection to nature and the outdoors. The hose, or "sock," is worn with the kilt and is typically made of wool and is held up by garters. This photograph provides a glimpse into the rich history and traditions of the Scottish Highland Clans, and serves as a reminder of the pride and heritage that continues to be celebrated by Scots and those of Scottish descent around the world.
