EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment when John Lauder, the only son of renowned music hall entertainer and comedian Harry Lauder, leads a practice charge with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Territorials) at Bedford in 1915. John, a Cambridge-educated officer, is proudly wearing his kilted uniform and leading his troops with determination and focus. His father, an indefatigable recruiter and fundraiser during the First World War, looked on with pride as his son prepared for the real thing. Tragically, John's military career was cut short when he was killed in action on 28 December 1916. This poignant image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers and their families during the First World War. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, part of the British Army, were an infantry regiment with a rich history and strong Scottish heritage. This photograph, taken during a practice session, offers a rare glimpse into the training and preparation of soldiers during this pivotal period in world history.
