The Geisha by Owen Halt
The Geisha by Owen Hall; music Sidney Jones produced by George Edwardes. First produced at Dalys Theatre, London 25th April 1896. Edwardes took advantage of the continuing fascination of the public with the orient that had brought such success to Gilbert and Sullivan in The Mikado. However, The Geisha was a more topical entertainment than The Mikado, and despite its great initial popularity, The Geisha did not endure through the decades as well as The Mikado. This image is from the touring production to the Aquarium Theatre, Great Yarmouth, starting on 30th July 1903. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from a touring production of the comic play 'The Geisha' by Owen Hall, first produced at Daly's Theatre in London on April 25, 1896. Produced by Sidney Jones under the direction of George Edwardes, this theatrical entertainment took advantage of the public's enduring fascination with the Orient, which had previously brought great success to Gilbert and Sullivan in The Mikado. The Geisha, however, was a more topical and contemporary representation of the East than The Mikado, and despite its initial popularity, did not endure through the decades as well. In this photograph from the 1903 touring production at the Aquarium Theatre in Great Yarmouth, we see a scene from the tea house, a common setting in the play. The Japanese-inspired decor and costumes transport the audience to a far-off land, filled with exoticism and intrigue. The actors, with their exaggerated expressions and poses, add to the comedic and light-hearted tone of the production. The Geisha was a popular entertainment of its time, showcasing the latest in theatrical innovation and spectacle. The play's success can be attributed to the combination of Sidney Jones' music and George Edwardes' production values, which created a visually stunning and engaging theatrical experience. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the stage was a place of wonder and delight.
