Friedrich Heinrich Graf Wrangel: A Distinguished German Military Commander of the 19th Century This portrait depicts Friedrich Heinrich Graf Wrangel (1784-1877), a renowned German military commander who served in the Prussian and Russian armies. Born on July 12, 1784, in Riga, Latvia, Wrangel began his military career in the Prussian army, where he quickly rose through the ranks due to his exceptional leadership abilities and tactical acumen. In 1812, Wrangel joined the Russian army, fighting valiantly in the Napoleonic Wars. He distinguished himself during the Battle of Borodino, where he led a successful counterattack against the French forces. Wrangel's bravery and strategic prowess earned him the respect and admiration of his Russian comrades, and he was granted Russian citizenship and the title of Graf (count) in 1816. Throughout the rest of his career, Wrangel continued to serve the Russian military with distinction.
