Footballers Battalion attending HQ at Kingsway for pay, WW1

Mr F. J. Wall, secretary of the Football Association, sits at a table at the associations headquarters, ready to pay members of the Footballers Battalion. The caption comments that around 120 men had joined so far, with Clapton Orient being the most prominent for numbers, but of course, very many more are wanted - and would come, if Cup tie gates did not make national existence kick the beam.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant image from 1915, Mr. F.J. Wall, the Secretary of the Football Association, sits at the association's headquarters in Kingsway, ready to pay members of the Footballers Battalion. Around 120 footballers had joined the battalion so far, with Clapton Orient leading the charge in terms of numbers. However, it is clear that many more were needed, and would come, if the gates at Cup ties did not threaten to jeopardize the very existence of the national football league. The Footballers Battalion, a unique military unit formed during the First World War, was comprised of professional footballers who put down their soccer balls to answer the call to arms. The battalion, which was part of the Middlesex Regiment, was formed in response to the growing sense that sportsmen, with their fitness and discipline, could make valuable contributions to the war effort. The image captures a moment of solidarity and determination, as these brave men, who had entertained and inspired the nation through their athletic prowess, now pledged their loyalty and strength to the cause of the war. The Footballers Battalion went on to see action on the Western Front, and their story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by athletes and civilians alike during the Great War.
