Chelsea Football Club, founded in March 1905. The top picture shows the squad of players and officials. The lower picture shows the ground at Stamford Bridge, which had previously been used as an athletics stadium. Date: September 1905

The first Football League match between two teams from the southern half of England. Two years after their founding, Chelsea FC play host to Woolwich Arsenal in front of over 60, 000 spectators at Stamford Bridge, and win 2 - 1. On the left, the two captains, WIndridge and Sands, shake hands. On the right, the Chelsea goalkeeper makes a save. Date: 9 November 1907

Arsenal footballer Alex James passes three Manchester City players, c1929-c1937. An inside forward renowned for his ball control and passing, Alex James (1901-1953) is regarded as one of the greatest players in Arsenal's history. He made 236 appearances for the club between 1929 and 1937, scoring 26 goals. He also won 8 caps for Scotland.
