Flageolets

Flageolets - the last example in present use of the flutes douces or a bec which were so popular in the 17th century. Samuel Pepys wrote in his diary (20th January, 1667) " To Drumblebys the pipe-maker, there to advise about the making of a flageolet to go low and soft; and he do show me... a fashion of having two pipes... fastened together, so as I can play in one and then echo it upon the other, thisch is mighty pretty!". The two flageolets shown here were made by Wm. Bainbridge of London, about one hundred years ago. Date: 1929

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a pair of antique Flageolets, a type of woodwind instrument that gained immense popularity during the 17th century, often referred to as 'flutes douces' or 'becs.' The image, taken in 1929, features two beautifully crafted Flageolets made by the renowned English pipe-maker, Wm. Bainbridge of London. These instruments, which predate the widespread use of metal and brass band instruments, were known for their soft, mellow tones. Samuel Pepys, a famous English diarist, documented his visit to a pipe-maker named Drumblebys in 1667, where he was advised on the creation of a low and soft flageolet. He was intrigued by the idea of having two pipes fastened together, allowing him to play in one and echo the melody on the other. This innovative design added an element of harmony and complexity to the instrument's sound. Flageolets, with their slender, curved shape and delicate construction, were often made from boxwood, ebony, or ivory. Their distinctive design, with a finger hole at the end of the instrument, allowed for a unique playing technique, producing a sound that was both hauntingly beautiful and versatile. The history of the flageolet is a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of musical instruments, showcasing the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the past. This pair of antique flageolets, crafted by Wm. Bainbridge, stands as a testament to the enduring allure of these enchanting instruments and the rich musical heritage they represent.
