EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts Ezra Meeker, a pioneer and esteemed citizen of Puyallup, Washington, standing in front of his homestead located at 321 East Pioneer Street. The image was captured on January 29, 1906, just before Meeker embarked on an extraordinary journey. As the first mayor of Puyallup, a one-time Hop King, historian, and author, Meeker was a man of many accomplishments. However, his most notable endeavor came at the age of 75, when he self-appointed himself as the champion of the Oregon Trail. With two oxen, a wagon, a driver, and his faithful dog, Meeker set out from his front yard with the goal of preserving and re-marking the Oregon Trail, which was being lost to the relentless march of civilization. In the foreground of this photograph, Meeker is seen surrounded by the equipment he would take on his journey, which was soon to commence. The house, a testament to the past, stands proudly behind him, a symbol of the American dream realized. The scene exudes a sense of determination and adventure, as Meeker prepared to embark on his historic trek across the states, from Puyallup, Washington, to Washington D.C., and eventually New York City. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, a moment in time when one man's passion for history led him to make a difference, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come.
