Equestrian statue of Lord Kitchener
A colossal equestrian statue of Lord Kitchener of Khartoum (1850-1916), the first monument to be raised to the famous general, pictured shortly before it was sent to India, where it was placed on the Maiden, the magnificent park in Calcutta, as a tribute to his work as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. The statue was cast in bronze, stood fourteen feet high and was placed on a twelve foot high pedestal. It represented Lord Kitchener in Field Marshals uniform, mounted on his favourite horse, Democrat. The sculpture, the cost of which was raised by public subscription, was by Sydney March (1875-1968), who also sculpted King Edward VII, King George V, Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra. Lord Kitchener inspected the new statue the day before he left for Egypt and expressed his approval of the work.
circa 1911

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the colossal equestrian statue of the renowned British military leader, Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, shortly before it was shipped to India in 1911. The statue, which stands as the first monument dedicated to the famous general, was raised as a tribute to his exceptional work as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. The statue, which stands fourteen feet high, was cast in bronze and placed atop a twelve-foot high pedestal in Calcutta's Maidan, a magnificent park. Lord Kitchener is depicted in his Field Marshal's uniform, proudly seated atop his favorite horse, Democrat. The sculpture, which cost a considerable sum raised through public subscription, was the brilliant work of renowned British sculptor Sydney March. March, who also sculpted King Edward VII, King George V, Queen Mary, and Queen Alexandra, expertly captured the heroic spirit of Lord Kitchener. The statue's creation was a source of great pride for the people of India, and Lord Kitchener himself inspected the new monument the day before he departed for Egypt. The equestrian statue of Lord Kitchener stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of this military leader, whose contributions to the Indian Army will forever be remembered.
