EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the young face of Edward Colin Ryder Richardson, an eleven-year-old boy from London, who was commended for his bravery during the darkest days of World War II. In 1941, Edward was among the 90 child evacuees traveling from Britain to Canada with the Children's Overseas Reception Board aboard the SS City of Benares. The ship, carrying a total of 458 passengers, including 289 children, was tragically hit by a torpedo from the German submarine U-48. Amidst the chaos and terror that ensued, Edward displayed remarkable courage and composure. He helped other children put on life jackets, calmed those who were frightened, and even tried to keep the younger children from panicking by telling them stories. Despite the heavy loss of life, with 331 people, including 236 children, perishing in the disaster, Edward and 117 others were rescued. Edward's bravery did not go unnoticed. He was included in the New Years Honours List among Service and Civilian heroes for his commendable actions during the sinking of the SS City of Benares. This image, taken in the 1940s, stands as a testament to the resilience and heroism of children during wartime. The City of Benares tragedy was a stark reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II and the unwavering spirit that prevailed even in the most challenging of circumstances.
