EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enchanting presence of Edmee Dormeuil, a celebrated French actress who graced the stages of London's West End during the tumultuous period of the First World War. The image, taken by renowned photographer William Barribal, showcases Dormeuil in her most iconic role as the heroine in The Better Ole, a musical play based on the cartoons of Bruce Bairnsfather in The Bystander. The Better Ole, which premiered at the Oxford Theatre in 1918, was a tremendous success, with Dormeuil's portrayal of a vivandière who falls in love with Old Bill, the central character, and eventually provides the crucial evidence that transforms him from a traitor into a hero, leaving audiences spellbound. Following the success of The Better Ole, Dormeuil continued her theatrical journey in an Andre Charlot-produced revue at the Comedy Theatre in the same year. Her captivating performances in these productions brought joy and entertainment to Londoners during a time of great hardship and uncertainty.
