EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored illustration, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, depicts the ecclesiastical rite of tonsure in the 15th century. The scene unfolds in a grand ecclesiastical setting, with a bishop presiding over the ceremony, dressed in his full regalia. He wears a miter, a tall, conical hat symbolizing his episcopal rank, and a chasuble, a long, sleeveless garment worn over the alb, or undergarment, during the Mass. The bishop is also adorned with a dalmatic, a vestment worn during the liturgy, and a maniple, a decorative band worn on the left arm. Surrounding the bishop are several novices, eager to receive the tonsure, a rite of admission into the religious life. The tonsure involved the shaving of the crown of the head, signifying the renunciation of worldly vanities and the dedication to a life of service to God. The novices are shown with their hair shorn, wearing albs and surplices, simple white garments worn as undergarments and overgarments, respectively. The intricately detailed illustration captures the solemnity and reverence of the ceremony, as well as the ornate clothing and accessories that were an integral part of ecclesiastical life in the 15th century. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing insight into the fashion, customs, and religious practices of the time. The illustration is from the book "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries," published by Levy Fils in Paris in 1860.
