Arthropod Arthropoda Bot Fly Botfly Diptera Hexapod Hexapoda Insecta Larva Larvae Martin Hall Oestridae Parasite Parasitic True Fly Invertebrata

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases the second instar larva of Dermatobia hominis, commonly known as the New World skin botfly. Collected from a cow in Brazil, this parasitic arthropod is a member of the Oestridae family, specifically the Cuterebrinae subfamily, and is classified under the order Diptera, true flies. The Dermatobia hominis, also known as the flesh-eating botfly or human botfly, is an invertebrate parasite that poses a significant threat to both livestock and humans. The larvae burrow under the skin of their hosts, causing painful and sometimes fatal infections. The adult flies lay their eggs on the skin, and the larvae hatch and burrow into the tissue, feeding on the host's living tissue and fluids. The hexapod larva in this photograph is a testament to the intricate and complex life cycle of this parasitic arthropod. Its six legs, a characteristic feature of the class Hexapoda, are clearly visible, as are its distinct head and thorax segments. The larva's body is covered in tiny hairs, which help it to attach itself to the host's skin and prevent it from being dislodged. Martin Hall, the skilled photographer, captured this image with exceptional clarity and detail, allowing us to observe the larva's unique features up close. The photograph is an important reminder of the fascinating and often overlooked world of parasitic arthropods and the crucial role they play in ecosystems.
