EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Princess Victoria, later known as Princess Royal and Empress of Prussia, is seen as an infant during her christening in the grand Throne Room of Buckingham Palace on 10 February 1841. Princess Vicky, as she was affectionately called, was the eldest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, making her the future heir to the British throne. The christening ceremony was performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Howley, in the presence of the royal family and distinguished guests. Dressed in a beautiful white christening gown, Princess Vicky appears serene and content as she is held by an attendant. Surrounded by ornate gold decorations and intricate tapestries, the Throne Room provides a fitting backdrop for this momentous occasion. The christening marked the beginning of Princess Vicky's life as a member of the British royal family and set the stage for her future role as a princess consort of Prussia. Princess Vicky went on to marry Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia in 1859, becoming the mother of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Her life was marked by significant events, including the unification of Germany and the establishment of the German Empire. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of the British and German royal families and the life of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on European history.
