EDITORS COMMENTS
This lantern slide depicts the Women's Quarters, or Pei-Tang, in China during the late 1890s. Pei-Tang was a part of the Forbidden City in Beijing, the imperial palace complex of the Chinese emperors, which was off-limits to commoners. The Women's Quarters were reserved exclusively for the wives and concubines of the emperor and his sons. The image reveals a serene and intimate scene of daily life within the Women's Quarters. The women are shown sitting on mats, engaged in various activities such as sewing, embroidery, or playing musical instruments. The room is adorned with intricate decorations, including ornate wooden beams, colorful paintings on the walls, and delicate screens. The women wear traditional Chinese clothing, with their hair styled in elaborate updos. The lantern slide offers a unique glimpse into the lives of the imperial women during the late 19th century in China. The Forbidden City and its inhabitants were largely closed off from the outside world, and very few Westerners were allowed to enter. This lantern slide provides a rare and valuable record of this hidden world, offering insights into the culture, customs, and daily life of the Chinese imperial court. The slide is part of Box 159 Pekin, slide no. 49, from the collection of Mary Evans Picture Library. It is believed to have been taken during the 1890s, making it an important historical document of this fascinating period in Chinese history.
