Taking the Waters at the Chalybeate Spring, The Pantiles, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent - a scene unchanged for at least the last four centuries. In 1606, Dudley, Lord North, a courtier to King James I, discovered the Chalybeate Spring in Tunbridge Wells while staying at a hunting lodge in Eridge in the hope that the country air might improve his ailing constitution. The discovery of the mineral-rich spring marked the beginning of Tunbridge Wells' reputation as a popular health resort. The Chalybeate Spring, located in the heart of The Pantiles, a picturesque colonnade of Georgian buildings, has been attracting visitors for centuries. The water from the spring, rich in iron, was believed to have healing properties, and taking the waters became a fashionable pastime among the aristocracy and the well-to-do. In this photograph, dated circa 1910, we see a scene that has remained largely unchanged since Lord North's time. A woman in a long, flowing dress, accompanied by a male attendant, approaches the spring to take a sip of the mineral-rich water. The elegant Pantiles, with their colorful shops and tea rooms, provide a backdrop to the tranquil scene. The historical significance of the Chalybeate Spring is evident in the architectural details of the surrounding buildings, which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The intricate stonework, wrought iron railings, and ornate columns are a testament to the town's rich history and its enduring appeal as a popular health resort and tourist destination.
