1715 1769 Buttons Cravat Gellert Lacy Oval
EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature portrait captures the likeness of Christian Friedrich Höhne (1715-1769), better known by his pen name Christian Friedrich Hölderlin and commonly referred to in English as Christian Friedrich Gellert. The German poet, born in Ludwigsbourg, Württemberg, is depicted in the portrait wearing the fashionable attire of the mid-18th century. He is seen wearing a white, powdered wig, adorned with a lacy band, and a cravat fastened with a golden button. The poet's piercing gaze and serious expression convey a sense of deep introspection and intellectual focus. The portrait was created in 1769, towards the end of Gellert's life. By this time, he had already gained a significant reputation as a poet and writer. Gellert is best known for his works that explored the themes of love, friendship, and morality. His most famous collection of poems, "Sternstunden des Andenkens" (Moments of Remembrance), was published posthumously in 1782. Gellert's literary career began in 1741 when he was appointed as a teacher in Homburg. He later moved to Halle, where he studied philosophy and theology under the renowned philosopher Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin. However, Gellert's interest in literature soon overshadowed his academic pursuits, and he began writing poetry and prose. Despite facing numerous challenges throughout his life, including financial hardships and ill health, Gellert continued to write and publish his works. His poetry was deeply influenced by the Enlightenment and the Romantic movement, and his works were widely read and admired in Germany and beyond. This beautiful miniature portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable poet and thinker, whose works continue to inspire and captivate readers to this day.
