This powerful photograph captures the unwavering bravery and heroism of Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Martin-Leake, VC and Bar, a double recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valor in the British military. Born on April 4, 1874, Martin-Leake first earned his Victoria Cross in 1902 during the Second Boer War while serving as a surgeon-captain in the South African Constabulary. At the age of 40, Martin-Leake earned his second Victoria Cross during World War I, in November 1914, while serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps near Zonnebeke, Belgium. Amidst constant enemy fire, he rescued a number of wounded soldiers stranded close to German trenches, carrying them to safety one by one. Martin-Leake's heroic actions on the battlefield are a testament to his unwavering commitment to saving lives and his unyielding courage in the face of danger. This photograph, taken in 1915, captures the essence of a true hero and serves as a reminder of the incredible sacrifices made by soldiers and medical personnel during times of war.
