Capri Marina
Capri Marina - Seashore, boats, cliffs. Part of Box 145 Boswell Collection - East Coast. The Marina Piccola, on the islands southern shore, preceded the Marina Grande; it was used by Augustus and Tiberius. An ancient fishing port, the Romans used the Marina Grande as a port during Augustian times, and built the Palazzo a Mare nearby. Tiberius fortified and reinforced Marina Grande. Capri was also the first point in Campania in which the Greeks landed and women on Capri are still said to still sometimes show distinctly Grecian features. In the seventh century, Bishop Costanzo died near Marina Grande and became the islands patron saint; the Chiesa di San Costanzo is situated between Marina Grande and Anacapri. 1. Capri Marina: A Timeless Harbor on the Southern Shore of the Enchanting Island (Circa 1900) The captivating image before you transports us to the picturesque Marina Piccola on the southern shore of the iconic island of Capri, Italy. This serene seashore, with its crystal-clear waters, picturesque boats, and towering cliffs, has been a beacon of beauty and history for centuries. Marina Piccola predates its more famous counterpart, Marina Grande, and holds a rich and diverse past. Augustus and Tiberius, ancient Roman emperors, are believed to have used this ancient fishing port. The Romans, in turn, built the Palazzo a Mare nearby, further enhancing the area's allure. Capri, an island steeped in history, was the first point of contact in Campania for the Greeks. The distinctive Grecian features of the local women are still a testament to this fascinating past. In the seventh century, the island gained a patron saint in Bishop Costanzo, who died near Marina Grande. The Chiesa di San Costanzo, a beautiful church dedicated to the saint, stands between Marina Grande and Anacapri. As you gaze at this timeless photograph, you can almost hear the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore, feel the sun on your skin, and breathe in the crisp, salty air. The Marina Piccola, with its stunning beauty and rich history, invites us to explore the wonders of Capri and the enchanting allure of the Italian coast.
