EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment in the history of Hedgerley Court Farm Home For Boys, located in the picturesque village of Hedgerley, Buckinghamshire. Established in 1893 by the Waifs and Strays Society, the home provided a safe and nurturing environment for orphaned, abandoned, or neglected boys. In this image, we see two young boys, dressed in simple clothing, standing next to a cow. The boys have just arrived at their new home in Canada, as part of a larger group of children who were sent overseas as part of a program aimed at providing them with better opportunities and a fresh start. The Waifs and Strays Society, a British charity, had been operating since 1883 and had a long history of helping children in need. The decision to send children to Canada was made in response to the growing number of children in their care and the belief that a new environment would benefit them. The boys were sent to various farms and homes across the country, where they would learn valuable skills and be given the opportunity to build a better future. The photograph, taken circa 1924, is a poignant reminder of the important work carried out by the Waifs and Strays Society and the impact it had on the lives of countless children. The boys in the image, with their curious expressions and the gentle cow looking on, seem to embody the hope and uncertainty of a new beginning. This historical photograph is a precious record of a time when the lives of these boys were about to change forever.
