EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of the North American YF-100A Super Sabre making its first landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California on May 25, 1953, following its maiden flight. The YF-100A was an experimental supersonic jet bomber developed by North American Aviation for the United States Air Force (USAF) as part of the Strategic Air Command's (SAC) Project Sagebrush. Designed to carry nuclear weapons, the YF-100A was the first American production aircraft to exceed the speed of sound in level flight. The YF-100A's maiden flight took place on May 24, 1953, piloted by test pilot Bob Chilton. The aircraft reached a top speed of 670 miles per hour and demonstrated excellent handling characteristics. However, despite its impressive performance, the project was canceled due to budget constraints and the emergence of more advanced designs. The YF-100A's cancellation was a significant blow to North American Aviation, but it marked the beginning of the company's successful development of the F-100 Super Sabre fighter, which went on to become a mainstay of the USAF inventory throughout the Cold War. This photograph is a testament to the pioneering spirit of aviation and the relentless pursuit of technological advancement in the post-World War II era.
