1. Title: A Fortunate Mishap: Two RCAF Ansons Lock in Mid-Air During Training Exercises at Macleod, Alberta, Canada, 1940s 2.. In the 1940s, the skies above Macleod, Alberta, Canada, were filled with the sounds of Avro Anson training aircraft as No. 7 Service Flying Training School carried out its vital mission to prepare pilots for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and the Royal Air Force (RAF). Among the many stories of triumph and success, one incident stands out as a testament to the pilots' skill, quick thinking, and a touch of luck. On a sunny day in the 1940s, two Avro Anson trainers, piloted by Flying Officers John H. McKeown and L.A. Bolli, were approaching Runway 27 at Macleod Airfield for a landing. As they executed their glide approaches, fate had an unexpected twist in store. At an altitude of about 50 feet, the two aircraft collided. The impact was not severe, and the Ansons became locked together, their wings and fuselages entwined like a peculiar dance. Despite the unusual situation, both pilots remained calm and focused on the task at hand. Flying Officer McKeown, in the lower aircraft, was in a better position to execute an emergency landing. He skillfully guided his Anson to the runway, touching down safely, albeit with an unusual passenger. The impact of the collision had caused minimal damage to his aircraft, and both pilots were unharmed. Flying Officer Bolli, in the upper aircraft, was left dangling precariously above the ground. With the help of ground crew, he managed to free his Anson from its locked position and safely landed it as well. This humorous incident serves as a reminder of the challenges and triumphs faced by pilots during their training, and the importance of maintaining focus and composure in the face of the unexpected.
