This engraving depicts the Gendarmerie Scelta, or Select Gendarmerie, of the Kingdom of Italy during the Napoleonic epoch. Established in 1808, this elite military unit was part of the Guardia Reale, or Royal Guard, and was responsible for maintaining order and providing security for the Italian monarchy. The soldiers in this print are dressed in their distinctive uniforms, which include a blue tunic with red lapels and white trousers. They are also wearing tall, peaked hats adorned with a cockade and a white plume. Each soldier carries a rifle slung over his shoulder, complete with a bayonet fixed in place. A cartridge belt is worn across their chests, holding ammunition for their rifles. The Gendarmerie Scelta were also armed with sabres, which were worn on their hips.
