This evocative photograph captures the 9th Duke of Argyll, John Douglas Campbell (1845-1914), in his regal attire as Marquis of Lorne during the mid-late 19th century. The Duke, who was the eldest son of the 8th Duke of Argyll, assumed the title and estates upon his father's death in 1847. Known for his military prowess and political acumen, the Duke served as a Member of Parliament and held various high-ranking positions within the British government. The Duke's life was marked by significant events in Scottish and British history. He was instrumental in the development of the Clyde shipbuilding industry and the expansion of the Glasgow Exhibition of 1888. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, leading the British forces to victory at the Battle of Ulundi. In 1871, the Duke married Princess Louise Caroline Alberta of Prussia, who later became the Duchess of Argyll. Their union brought the Scottish and German royal families closer together, and their children included the future 10th Duke of Argyll and the Duchess of Fife.
