EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts Lucius Apuleius, a renowned Latin writer born in North Africa around 124 AD. Apuleius is best known for his work "Metamorphoses," also referred to as "The Golden Ass," which is considered one of the earliest surviving works of European prose fiction. In this masterpiece, Apuleius weaves together elements of myth, romance, and satire, telling the story of Lucius, a young man who is transformed into an ass and embarks on a series of adventures before ultimately being restored to human form. The scene depicted in this print is from the ninth book of "Metamorphoses," which centers around the tale of Psyche and the Asinus Aureus, or the Golden Ass. In this episode, Psyche, who is in love with an unseen deity, is given a task to prove her devotion. She is asked to place a box in her bedroom and not to look inside it, no matter what. Tempted, Psyche opens the box and is momentarily blinded by the beauty of Venus, who has been hiding within. As a result of her disobedience, Psyche is banished from the gods' presence, and it is only through the intervention of Cupid that she is eventually reunited with her beloved. Apuleius' "Metamorphoses" has had a profound impact on European literature, influencing works by authors such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Goethe. This image of Lucius Apuleius serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of this remarkable writer and his timeless tales of love, transformation, and the human condition.
