EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolour depicts the Acacia terminalis, also known as the sunshine wattle or golden wattle, a native flowering plant of Australia. The illustration was created by the acclaimed artist Fred Polydore Nodder in the late 18th century, based on an original outline drawing by Sydney Parkinson during Captain James Cook's first voyage across the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1771. The Acacia terminalis is a member of the Fabaceae or legume family, which is the third largest family of angiosperms, or flowering plants. This eudicotyledon, or dicot, is characterized by its two seed leaves, or cotyledons, and its net-like veins. The plant is also a member of the Rosid clade, which includes a large group of flowering plants that have a rose-like inflorescence. The sunshine wattle is a small to medium-sized tree that can grow up to 15 meters tall. It is known for its bright yellow flowers, which appear in clusters and bloom throughout the year in its native habitat. The tree is also notable for its hard, dense wood, which has been used for various purposes, including fuel, furniture, and tool handles. This beautiful watercolour is a testament to the remarkable botanical discoveries made during Captain Cook's voyages, which expanded European knowledge of the natural world. The attention to detail in the illustration, from the intricate veining of the leaves to the delicate petals of the flowers, showcases the skill and artistry of Fred Polydore Nodder and Sydney Parkinson. The sunshine wattle remains an iconic symbol of Australia's natural beauty and diversity.
