EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie Tussaud, the remarkable Swiss wax model maker, poses for her own creation at the ripe age of 90. In this poignant tableau, the venerable Madame Tussaud wears a long, flowing cloak, its deep folds and intricate texture faithfully rendered in wax. Her bonnet, adorned with delicate ribbons and flowers, sits atop her graying hair, which is also meticulously crafted from the same material. The lines on her face, etched with the passage of time, are captured with uncanny precision. Her expressive eyes, framed by wire-rimmed spectacles, convey a sense of wisdom and experience. Born in 1761 in Strasbourg, Marie Tussaud began her career as a wax sculptor at the age of 16, working for Philippe Curtius, a wax modeler in Paris. After Curtius' death, she inherited his collection and continued to add to it, creating over 700 models throughout her long and illustrious career. Her creations ranged from historical figures, such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Voltaire, to famous personalities of her time, including Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. Marie Tussaud's waxworks were not only admired for their lifelike accuracy but also for their ability to capture the essence of their subjects. Her models were displayed in a series of rooms, each with a specific theme, and visitors would navigate through them, marveling at the intricacy and detail of each figure. In this photograph, taken in 1850, Marie Tussaud sits before one of her own creations, a testament to her enduring legacy as a pioneer in the art of wax modeling. Her hands, still nimble and dexterous, rest on the base of the model, a reminder of the countless hours she spent bringing her artistic vision to life. The waxwork museum she founded in 1835, which continues to attract visitors from around the world, stands as a testament to her unwavering dedication and passion for her craft.
